Break-even ROAS is a useful boundary, not a promise. Start with gross margin, then add the costs and conversion assumptions that matter to your model.

Practical ruleMake the decision, evidence and owner explicit before adding another channel, tool or automation.

Start with contribution margin

A simplified break-even ROAS is 1 divided by contribution margin. If the margin is 50%, the boundary is 2.00x before overhead, refunds and other costs.

Add the costs that the platform hides

Include fulfilment, sales effort, discounts, agency or tooling costs and the difference between booked and collected revenue where they materially change the decision.

Use scenarios, not one magic number

Model conservative, expected and upside assumptions for conversion rate, average order value and margin. The useful output is a range and a decision rule.

Turn the model into an action

Decide what must be true before adding budget, what evidence would change the assumption and who owns the next review.
